2017: Major General Michael E. Dunlavey ’67 USA (Ret.)

In recognition of his military service, including his work to help protect the United States from terrorist attacks, Major General Michael Dunlavey ’67 is honored with the 2017 Rev. William Corby, C.S.C., Award.
After graduating from Notre Dame, Dunlavey served for four years in the United States Army, with assignments in Germany and Vietnam. He then earned his law degree and went on to distinguish himself as both an attorney and a judge in Pennsylvania.
Throughout his legal career, he continued to lead the life of a citizen-soldier by serving in the Army Reserves. He was eventually promoted to Major General, the highest rank possible for a reserve officer.
After the 9/11 attacks, Dunlavey was recalled to active duty. Based on his unique combat, intelligence, and legal background, he was chosen by the Secretary of Defense to design an intelligence-gathering program to help prevent further attacks on the United States.
Dunlavey has dedicated a significant amount of his time to a number of organizations that support veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury, and to organizations that provide training and workforce development services for veterans transitioning from military to civilian life.
"What does the Corby award mean to me? I believe that the award represents all my Notre Dame brothers and sisters who have served and sacrificed for our country and epitomize the phrase “God, Country, and Notre Dame.” I am humbled that I was chosen for this award. On September 9th I pray that my classmates and friends who sacrificed everything will be standing beside me sharing this honor."
