National Championships

Dec 30, 2012

Has anyone noticed the irony that playing in the National Championship game is the only way we can lose the National Championship?...

If the pre-1968 method of picking National Champions were still in play (where the Bowl Games did not count), we would be the Champs.  And, if we had not changed our policy on Bowl Games, we would not be going.  Since no eligible team is undefeated except us, we would be the Champs.  Remember that we lost the National Championship in 1953, only because of the former bowl rule.  We ended the year 9-0-1, while Maryland won the N.C. at 9-1, having lost to Oklahoma in their Bowl Game.  We defeated Oklahoma (of course) during the season.
