Now that I am retired, I have a little more time for my several hobbies. This week I have gone through the 30+ boxes of sports publications I have collected over the past 50 years. Yikes...
I have programs for the 1966 and 1967 “Varsity vs. Old-Timers” games. This was the end of the line for this nomenclature. From Rockne’s time onward, the “old timers” were the graduating seniors, former players, and even Rockne himself. Senator Ted Kennedy was allegedly snuck into one game, during the early 50’s.
Graduating seniors and former players no longer play in what is now called the Blue Gold Game. Current players are too big and strong for anyone but a current pro to take them on and no NFL team (or player agent) is going to permit their players to compete.
Looking at these two programs, the former players included Gus Cifelli (1949); Leon Hart (1950); Bill Flynn (1950); John Lattner (1954); Bob Pietrzak (1959); George Izo (1959); Red Mack (1960); and Ed Rutkowski (1962). Among the more recent grads were Dave Pivec; Norm Nicola; Bob Lehman; and John Atamian.
This Saturday is Notre Dame’s 84th annual spring football game.
Dan Hicks is the new play by play man for ND football and he will call his first game, which will be shown live on NBC Sports Network, beginning at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday. This is only the third time that the spring scrimmage will be televised nationally.
The regular season of Notre Dame Football on NBC begins Saturday, Aug. 31, at 3:30 p.m., when we host Temple. The 2013 home schedule also includes games against Michigan State on Saturday, Sept. 21; Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 28; USC on Saturday, Oct. 19; Navy on Saturday, Nov. 2; and BYU on Saturday, Nov. 23.
