The day before the Nevada game, 18 members of the Joe Doherty family gathered at “A Sacred Space at a Sacred Place.” This is what the University calls the Alumni Mausoleums at Cedar Grove Cemetery on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Joe’s wish at his passing in Santa Ynez, CA was to “come home” to Notre Dame and so the family decided to make the long journey for a football weekend to celebrate Joe’s favorite place. Joining the family for the internment were four classmates from Notre Dame High School in Niles, IL…Don’s John Devona, Tim Cavers, Jack Gerken and Jerry Erbach. All but Cavers were also Joe’s mates in the UND Class of ’66.
