2018: William P. “Billy” Bradford II ’74 M.A.

In recognition of his outstanding work as an actor, director, and longtime theatre educator, William P. “Billy” Bradford II ’74 M.A. is honored with this award.

Bradford’s foundation was set thanks to his Catholic education and the messages he received from his parents. His mother told him he had two choices: get ordained a priest and/or graduate from Notre Dame. His father whistled show tunes, took him to films, and told him to watch what actors do so he could “get the kind of education you need to never punch a clock.”

He performed as a child with Jewell K. McNairy and her Dancers and in productions at St. Augustine Grade School directed by Sister Cecilia Edward, SCN. He also sang in the chorus at St. Xavier High School and took voice lessons recommended by Brother Xavier, CFX.

The guidance from Bellarmine University faculty, Dr. Robert M. Fischer and Reverend Edwin Scherzer, helped him decide that the theatre would be his career, and he taught and performed with the Kentucky Opera Chorus, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and summer stock theatres.

In 2007 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Bellarmine University, and he earned a Theatre Educator Tony Award nomination in 2015.

He continues to stage many classics and produced students who have appeared on Broadway, in film, and on television.

“I am indebted to the University of Notre Dame, my students, and the Holy Cross Brothers for inspiring my teaching, and to the wise words of my mother for this distinguished honor.”
