Established in 2000, the Rev. Arthur S. Harvey Award recognizes an alumnus/ae, living or deceased, for their outstanding accomplishments or achievements as practicing performing artists.

The 2009 Harvey Award was presented to Mr. Theodore J. Robinson ’78

With this award, Theodore J. “Ted” Robinson ’78 is honored for his outstanding accomplishments and achievements as a practicing performing artist.  A two-time Emmy Award winner, Robinson has a rich history of broadcasting experience. He has announced games for the NFL, the MLB, the Olympics, college football and basketball, swimming, diving, and tennis.

While at Notre Dame, Robinson worked at the student radio station for four years, serving as sports director for two years. He also was a staff writer for the student newspaper, The Observer. His first job after graduating was broadcasting for a minor-league hockey team in Oklahoma City.

Robinson has announced major-league baseball for more than 20 years. He spent nine seasons covering the San Francisco Giants as the play-by-play radio and TV announcer, six seasons as the TV play-by-play announcer for the Minnesota Twins, four seasons covering the New York Mets on radio and T.V., and three seasons as the TV announcer for the Oakland Athletics.

In addition to his work with the Athletics, Mets, Twins, and Giants, Robinson worked for The Baseball Network as an announcer for two years, worked four years on NBC Sports' Major League Baseball Game of the Week, and spent several years as a play-by-play voice for CBS Radio's Game of the Week. In 2007, Robinson called the American League Division Series for TBS.

Since 2000, Robinson has worked as the lead announcer for NBC’s coverage of major tennis championships, notably the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open. Robinson has provided commentary of the last six Olympics games, most recently covering diving at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In February, he will call his seventh Olympics from Vancouver, Canada for NBC.

Currently, Robinson is the radio play-by-play voice of the NFL San Francisco 49ers. He and his wife, Mary ’78, have two children, Annie ’05 and Patrick ’08, and they reside in Atherton, Calif.
