Established in 1985, the Rev. William Corby, C.S.C., Award is conferred on an alumnus/alumna (living or deceased) who has distinguished himself or herself in military service. The award is presented in honor of Notre Dame's third president, who was a celebrated Civil War chaplain of the Union army's Irish Brigade.

As the recipient of the Rev. William Corby, C.S.C., Award, Patrick J. Finneran, Jr. ’67, ’09 Ph.D. (Hon.) is recognized for his distinguished military service and dedication to serving his country. Finneran served his country for over twenty years as a Marine Corps officer, including a combat tour in Vietnam. He retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is a retired senior executive of the Boeing Company and an adjunct instructor in Notre Dame’s Executive Education Department.
