The Rev. John J. Cavanaugh, C.S.C., Award - 2018: Matthew L. Cutler ’92 and Randy J. Soriano ’92

Cutler and Soriano started the Joshua Chamberlain Society (JCS) about 10 years ago. The organization, named for a Civil War hero and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, provides support to severely wounded veterans and to the families of fallen warriors. This support is multi-faceted and comes in the form of monetary assistance, tuition payments, networking assistance, or any services that help improve JCS’s combat-injured veterans’ quality of life.
Since its founding, JCS has helped many veterans in the St. Louis area and has now expanded to Nashville as well. Each chapter runs independently so that contributors can see the support they provide will go to local veterans.
Cutler, who has pursued a career as a patent attorney, and Soriano, who attended Notre Dame on a Naval ROTC scholarship and served in the Marine Corps before becoming a civil litigation attorney, both remain committed to serving veterans.
“At its core, Notre Dame inspires love of family, loyalty, faithfulness, and service to community and country—values that formed us at ND and which became the foundation for what we have been able to accomplish through the Joshua Chamberlain Society (JCS). As such, we are honored and humbled to receive the Rev. John J. Cavanaugh, C.S.C., Award and do so on behalf of so many others, including family and friends who have been essential to JCS’s success, as well as all service members who have been injured or killed in combat, especially the 19 JCS heroes who have been adopted into JCS’s Notre Dame-inspired ‘family.’”
