Florida Region Spotlight
My name is Anne Roy and I am the Regional Director for Florida. I graduated in ‘81 and have three siblings that followed me to ND and my dad was in the class of ‘52. Prior to my election in 2020, I served as president of the Greater Jacksonville club and also served on the boards of the Springfield, IL and NYC clubs.
Fun fact to share: my very Catholic grandmother and her Jewish husband were huge ND supporters and frequently corresponded with Fr. Hesburgh. I still have a few of the typed letters.
I am originally from New York and made the move to Ponte Vedra Beach 16 years ago to escape the cold and mayhem of life in the Northeast. We have two kids that like the warm Florida weather but crave the bright lights of NYC and are living and working there.
Our Florida region is 20 clubs strong and we recently welcomed Puerto Rico to the fold. We are also working to wake up the echoes with the North Central Florida Club. Covid has put a little damper on the start-up but we will be ready when we can socialize in person!
Our Regional Director network includes Jim Minta, ‘79 (NDSA), Donna Leary Smith, ’81 (NDWC), Lauren Vidal, ‘15 (YA) and Selim Nurudeen ‘05 (Diversity Council).
Our start to 2021 is looking a bit like our finish to ‘20. Many clubs have chosen to limit functions to virtual events. We are meeting as a region every few months via Zoom and have also started a newsletter that goes out to all of the club presidents every few months.
Some quick news and notes for 2021:
Diversity Council RD Selim Nurudeen hosted a Q&A during Black History Month with Mike Brown ‘01. Everyone enjoyed getting to know Mike and his experience as the first black leprechaun.
All clubs are invited to take part in the NDWC Spring Shared Read: “Barking to the Choir”, on March 23rd. This event is hosted by Greater Jacksonville. Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton are organizing Zoom discussions.
In-person March events include a tennis social organized by the Greater Sarasota club and a Fort Lauderdale kickball team. Virtual events this month include Lenten reflections and a virtual rosary.
As we move forward, Tampa Bay is excited to host a Special Celebration with Lou Holtz on May 1st. Details are being finalized and will be shared via their webpage.
And finally, the Tallahassee club and the entire Florida region looks forward to kicking off the football season at FSU on August 5th. Stay tuned for more information about festivities!
