Judge Don Umhofer
I don't know if your readers would be interested in a fellow first-year (ND Law) colleague, who did not graduate with them, but we did spend some time together under Dean O'Meara.
I dropped out of ND Law at the end of our first year for a variety of reasons not pertinent here. My wife Betsy (SMC '67) and I drove out to San Francisco in June and observed the Summer of Love from a distance! I returned to law school at night and graduated in 1971 (J.D. at Golden Gate College School of Law) and passed the Bar that year. After a few moves and jobs around California, we made out home in San Luis Obispo, CA in 1978.
In 1983 Gov. Jerry Brown appointed me a judge of the Municipal Court; in 1998 I became a Superior Court judge. I officially retired in 2003; however, I have spent the last 13 years as an Assigned Judge filling in throughout the state for vacancies and absences, and continue to do so.
We have 3 married children and 7 grandkids. More info at www.judgeumhofer.blogspot.com
Don Umhofer, ND '66.
Great to hear from Don. We were roomies for half of our frosh year, until my excessive focus on studying (LOL) caused Don to seek out a better influence.
Don was a fine swimmer.
I bumped into Don outside the Coliseum, before an ND game, sometime during the 80’s, when he was on the bench and I was the Chief of Staff for the Sheriff of L.A. County.
Way to go, Don!
