Our Club President, Jim Mannix, was named the Grand Marshal for the 2020 Charlotte St. Patrick's Day Parade! Jim was chosen due to his leadership and success in connecting our ND Club to the Irish Community in Charlotte. Check out the article here: http://www.charlottestpatsday.com/grand-marshal/
Here is an excerpt of the article discussing the Club's invovlement in the Irish Community:
"Under his leadership, the ND Club has hosted and promoted numerous events to further the connections between the University and the Irish Community in Charlotte. In the last several years, his organization has participated in lecture series, Irish cultural events, and the St. Paddy’s Day Parade.
In 2019, the Notre Dame Club hosted Dr. Patrick Griffin, Director of Notre Dame’s Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies in Dublin, for its Hesburgh Lecture Series. The series, named after long-time University President – Fr. Theodore Hesburgh, has the goal of bringing academic and thought leadership from campus to local communities. Its purpose is to further lifelong learning and enriching the communities we serve. The Keough-Naughton Institute was responsible for the 2016 award-winning documentary: “1916 – The Irish Rebellion,” narrated by Liam Neeson.
Dr. Griffin’s lecture, “Ireland & the American Revolution” explored connections between Ireland and America during the late 18th century, when Charlotte was a “hornet’s nest” of rebellion. An internationally recognized historian, Dr. Griffin’s books include The People with No Name: Ireland’s Ulster Scots, America’s Scots Irish, and the Creation of a British Atlantic World.
The Notre Dame Club also participates in the St. Paddy’s Day Parade and the new Carolina Irish Festival (with proceeds going to the development of a Charlotte Irish-American Center (CIAC) as a non-profit, multi-use amateur sport and cultural facility)."
