THE BREAKFAST CLUB CONTINUES TO SERVE
The NDCOC Breakfast Club has served the neediest among us in Orange County for over thirty years, cooking a hot breakfast at the Southwest Community Center in Santa Ana for about 100 people in need every Sunday morning. An amazing group of dedicated ND alumni, ND students, local high school students and friends come to volunteer and enjoy the camaraderie.
With all the changes in our world from the coronavirus, we are still providing weekly meals, but in a socially-distanced way to protect our volunteers and SWCC employees and patrons. The ND Breakfast Club team leaders (Rusty Lamboley, Paul Leyva, Sue McCartney and Ed Graham) rotate responsibility for ensuring that one meal a week is still delivered to the SWCC. The food is either ordered to be delivered directly or it is taken in the team leader's trunk to the SWCC where their employees unload it and serve it according to their guidelines.
The SWCC has certainly felt the impact of COVID-19. They are providing only one take-out meal a day at this time. Over 100 people show up daily to receive the food (previously, the weekday lunch attendance was about 40 people). The need is greater than ever and sadly many other volunteer groups providing food have dropped out.
The Breakfast Club will continue to serve the SWCC uninterrupted. Heartfelt gratitude is due to the NDCOC County and to our volunteers. Our hearts are full.
