UPDATE ON TWIN PARISHES FOOD DRIVE

As many of our Club members know, the Senior Alums Group has spearheaded a relationship with Twin Parishes Food Bank for many years. Twin Parishes Food Bank

Here is an update from Kevin Holwerda-Hommes, the Director of Twin Parishes Food Bank.

“Greetings from Twin Parishes Food Bank! We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving!

As we do each year, we handed out Turkeys and other holiday food items last Tuesday and we saw a record number of visits, handing out 235 turkeys in one day! We plan to do the same

This summer and fall, we have seen a 40-50% increase in the number of distributions and are setting records of distributions each month, higher than our peak during the COVID pandemic.

As always, we plan to continue to meet the increased need, which requires more food procurement, volunteer hours, and funds. Many of you are already donating to Twin Parishes and we are so thankful for your support. We invite each of you to consider a donation to help us provide access to healthy and nutritious food for all as we work to alleviate hunger in our community. We welcome one-time donations and also highly appreciate ongoing monthly donors in any amount. A donation as little as $15 dollars per month provides a family with two food distributions in a month.

  • $15 per month provides food for 1 family each month
  • $30 per month provides food for 2 families each month
  • $60 per month provides food for 4 families each month

Donations can be made electronically through this link to our website or by sending a check to Twin Parishes Food Bank at 3663 Humboldt St. Denver, CO 80205.

There are many factors here in metro Denver that have continued to increase the number of visits to food pantries, including the influx of immigrants to the Denver area, the reduction of food stamp payments in the spring of this year, inflated food and transportation prices, and the continued rise in cost and scarcity of housing. We also continue to partner with other organizations in creating and advocating for better food systems and food security for all in Denver. We have been participating in the Building Belonging program through the Food Bank of the Rockies in order to increase the amount of culturally responsive foods we distribute. We also received funds from the State of Colorado to purchase more local and culturally responsive foods, which has been very welcomed by our clients.

If you would like to volunteer at Twin Parishes or come by for a visit, feel free to respond to this email.

Sincerely and With Gratitude,

Kevin Holwerda-Hommes

Director-Twin Parishes Food Bank”

DENVER DOMERS IN ACTION SAVING LIVES

Thanks to Club Directors Regan Ebert and Bill Webb, the Club is bringing back the “PINT FOR A PINT” BLOOD DRIVE. Blood donations are traditionally slow this time of year but the demand is just as great if not greater.

Here’s the deal - donate a Pint of Blood between now and December 22nd and you will earn a free Pint at Tom’s Watch Bar which you can redeem prior to the end of 2023. A great time to do so would be at one of our Bowl Game watch parties. We will be partnering with Vitalant Blood Donation to make this all happen.

To donate, set up an appointment at one of the Vitalant Donation Centers in Denver (717 Yosemite Street, Denver, Colorado 80230) in Littleton (5066 S.Wadsworth, Suite 111, Littleton, Colorado 80123) Boulder (3113 28th Street, Boulder, Colorado 80304) in Golden (13952 Denver West Pkwy, Golden, Colorado 80401) or in Westminster (960 W. 124th Ave., Westminster, Colorado 80234).

Here is the link to get it done

Vitalant will track your donation so we can let Tom’s Watch Bar know that you are eligible for your free Pint. They will also give you a certificate as a thank you which you can present at Tom’s to redeem your pint!

Questions? Email Club Director Regan Ebert at [email protected]

And...let us know if you donate so we can thank you!  Write to us at [email protected].

NOTRE DAME CLUB OF DENVER ANNUAL ANGELS AMONG US PROGRAM

BEING A FORCE FOR GOOD

Next week we will present a photo celebration of Angels Among Us.  As we have been reporting, the NDCD has made Christmas brighter for little “Angels'' for over 25 years and we have helped make Christmas wishes come true for literally thousands of kiddos.   Now that’s being a Force for Good.

Thanks to the generosity of Club Officers, Directors and Members, as well as our corporate partners, we have successfully continued one of our great Club traditions.  This year we are making Christmas wishes come true for 249 “Angels” in six Archdiocese of Denver Parochial Schools. This year we will touch the lives of “Angels” at Annunciation School, Assumption School, St. Rose of Lima, Wellspring Catholic Academy at St. Bernadette’s, Escuela de Guadalupe and Guardian Angels.

Very special thanks to our corporate partners without whom, we could not have accomplished so much over all these years:

SANTA CLAUS AND CHAPELS: CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS POP UP AT NOTRE DAME

“We wanted to do it this week because everyone is stressed and going into finals. So just a little brightness in their day as they’re walking around and parents love it too to get a picture of like their students during the day,” said Josie Humbert, committee chair of signature events for SUB.

Santa Claus had some encouraging words for Notre Dame students.

“Good luck on all your finals. I will bring better dining hall food next semester. I promise I’ve had a lot of people ask me for that. I can’t give you A’s on your papers, but I promise I’ll do my best. Also a new quarterback is coming straight from the workshop,” Claus said.

IRISH QUEST FOR A TITLE FALLS SHORT IN 2-1 LOSS TO CLEMSON IN FINAL

The Notre Dame men’s soccer team’s run for a second national title fell one win short in what was a magical season, suffering a 2-1 loss to the Clemson Tigers on Monday night at Lynn Family Stadium. The Tigers recorded goals in the 27th and 70th minute to take a 2-0 advantage while the Irish dominated most of the possession and opportunities in the second half. Notre Dame got one back in the 90th minute when Paddy Burns converted a penalty kick opportunity. Yet, the Irish ran out of time and fell a goal short despite outshooting the Tigers 15-9, including a 5-3 shots-on-goal advantage.

The Irish finished the season with a record of 13-3-6. Notre Dame made its second College Cup Final in program history along with advancing to its third College Cup ever, including second in three years. The Irish claimed the ACC Atlantic division crown after recording their first undefeated conference season (6-0-2) in program history.

MIKE BROWN NAMED WIDE RECEIVERS COACH

University of Notre Dame Dick Corbett Head Football Coach Marcus Freeman has announced the hiring of Mike Brown as wide receivers coach. Brown will begin his coaching duties immediately and will be with the Irish wideout group throughout the preparations for the 2023 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl.

Brown was most recently the associate head coach and wide receivers coach at the University of Wisconsin for the 2023 football season. He made the move to Wisconsin with head coach Luke Fickell from the University of Cincinnati, where he served as the wide receivers coach (2019-22) and passing game coordinator (2022).

A two-time All-American as a wide receiver at Liberty, Brown spent three seasons in the NFL after signing a free-agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brown played a key role in the Cincinnati offensive development during the Bearcats run to their first-ever 13-0 record and College Football Playoff appearance in 2021. He worked with All-AAC Second Team selection Alec Pierce, who led the team with 52 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. The wide receiver group helped Cincinnati set school records for touchdowns (70) and points scored (516) during the 2021 season.
