Because of a Parish scheduling conflict, we are postponing our Family Volunteer Camp event one week to Saturday, October 28th. That Saturday, we will be assisting Annunciation School with outdoor cleanup, especially tearing down their existing playground equipment. However, Annunciation is still looking for donations to help some kiddos who are going on an outdoor experience trip. (See Deb’s “ask” below) The Club has enjoyed a long association with Annunciation School and was our first Angels Among Us School. And, again this year, Annunciation has an ACE Student on its faculty.

FROM DEB ROBERTS - PRINCIPAL OF ANNUNCIATION SCHOOL

“We are calling for any and all help on Saturday, October 28th to come to Annunciation Catholic School for a day of service. This event will be deconstructing an old, damaged playground and will now take place from 8:30 am to 12 pm. Dress warmly since this will be outside. If you can't make it and would still like to help Annunciation, we are in need of warm winter layers and gear.  The 7th grade students will be needing these items for their upcoming two-day, overnight trip to Annunciation Heights near Estes Park. The items can be used and the stuff you find during a closet cleanout.

The items include but not limited to:

  • Sleeping bags
  • Hiking shoes
  • Snow shoes
  • Snow pants
  • Thick socks
  • Gloves

If you are able to make a donation to help our 7th grade kids on their trip, please drop these items by the school office on or before Tuesday, October 24th.

Thanks!”

On the 28th, we will begin at 8:30 AM and hope to be finished by noon so you can still catch most of the PITT Game at Tom’s Watch Bar. A light breakfast will be provided. Please contact Bob Kelley at [email protected] for all of the details to sign up and be a Force for Good here in our Denver Community. Annunciation School is located at 3536 N. Lafayette Street, Denver, Colorado 80205.

MORE UPCOMING NDCD COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS

9CARES COLORADO SHARES TELETHON

For well over 20 years, the Notre Dame Club of Denver has participated in the 9Cares annual drive to help the less fortunate in our Denver Community. Last year the Telethon raised over $800,000 and Channel 9 has set a goal this year of $1,000,000! We can help by manning the phone bank at the Channel 9 studio on Thursday, November 16th. The Club would like to find up to 20 volunteers to take calls. Sign up information will be coming your way in the coming weeks.

“PINT FOR A PINT” BLOOD DRIVE

Many years ago, our Club challenged the Boston College Alumni Club to a “bloodletting” the day of our football game with BC. We handily dispatched Boston College that day and won the blood donation contest as well!

Thanks to Club Directors Regan Ebert and Bill Webb, the Club is bringing back the “PINT FOR A PINT” BLOOD DRIVE. We will be partnering with Vitalant Blood Donation. Stay tuned for the particulars which we hope to have ready by next week.

“ANGELS AMONG US” CHRISTMAS TOY PROJECT

Continuing one of our great Club traditions, we will help make Christmas wishes come true for over 250 youngsters in five Denver area parochial schools. We have made Christmas a little brighter for our “Angels'' for over 25 years. In next week's email we will tell you how you can help us play Santa Claus again this year.

William P. Sexton, retired Vice President for University Relations and Professor Emeritus of Management at the University of Notre Dame, died on Oct. 17th. He was 85.

“Bill was the consummate gentleman — considerate, gracious and genuinely interested in the person to whom he was talking, regardless of the individual’s title or station,” Notre Dame’s president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., said. “He was always kind and encouraging to me in my early years in the University’s administration. Many have contributed to our current success, but very few more than Bill Sexton, who gave his life to the University of Notre Dame. We are grateful, and we will miss him.”

SPORTS WRITER GRANTLAND RICE PENNED THE

NOW LEGENDARY DESCRIPTION OF NOTRE DAME'S FOUR HORSEMEN

“Outlined against a blue-gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as Famine, Pestilence, Destruction and Death. These are only aliases. Their real names are: Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden. They formed the crest of the South Bend cyclone before which another fighting Army team was swept over the precipice at the Polo Grounds this afternoon as 55,000 spectators peered down upon the bewildering panorama spread out upon the green plain below.”
