The Irish and the Trojans - Another One of the Most Storied Rivalries in Football History

The American college football rivalry between the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team of the University of Notre Dame and USC Trojans football team of the University of Southern California, customarily played on the Saturday following Thanksgiving Day when the game is in Los Angeles or on the second or third Saturday of October when the game is in South Bend, Indiana.

The rivalry began in 1926 and is considered one of the fiercest in college football. The rivalry game has been played every year from 1926 to the present, with the exception of 1943–1945 when the game was cancelled during World War II and in 2020 when the Pac-12 Conference cancelled all non-conference games in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.[4] The pandemic therefore interrupted a streak of 73 consecutive years in which the game had been played. The 2021 matchup marked the first time in series history that two consecutive games between the rivals were played in South Bend, although the games were not played in consecutive years.

Notre Dame and USC have been among the most successful programs in college football, with the schools having won a combined 24 national championships and 15 Heisman Trophies (8 for USC—the most in college football—and 7 for Notre Dame) through the 2023 season. Moreover, both schools have fielded a high number of Consensus All-Americans (102 for Notre Dame—the most in college football—and 82 for USC), College Football Hall of Famers (46 from Notre Dame and 43 from USC), and Pro Football Hall of Famers (13 from each). The rivals account for the highest numbers of players selected in the NFL Draft of any school; Notre Dame has had 546 players taken, and USC has had 530. No rivalry in college football accounts for as many combined honors.

The teams play for the Jeweled Shillelagh, a trophy that goes home with the winning team each year. Notre Dame leads the all-time series 49–37–5 and also leads 34–30–3 since the introduction of the trophy. Despite many close games, the series has seen dominant runs by both sides: USC went 12–2–2 from 1967 through 1982, Notre Dame went undefeated (11–0–1) from 1983 through 1995, and USC went undefeated (8–0) from 2002 through 2009. However, while Notre Dame and USC have defeated the other in landmark games enabling one of them to move on to a national title, the two teams have also played spoiler to each other several times.

Awesome Club Gatherings for the Army Game

The Denver Irish Faithful gathered in two locations last Saturday to watch the Irish climb to number 4 in the rankings with a convincing win over Army.

Special thanks to Major General Steve Best (Ret.) who headed up a group of ARMY graduates and members of the West Point Society of Denver, West Point Society of Pikes Peak and West Point Society of Northern Colorado that joined us to watch the game. And more special thanks to Colleen Harvey and Regan Ebert who arranged for the Boulder Meet Up.

An Important Date for Notre Dame

November 26, 1842

Fr. Edward Sorin founded the University of Notre Dame when he and seven companions arrived at the 524 snow-covered acres that the Bishop of Vincennes gave them in the Indiana mission fields.

Be sure not to miss the Advent journey with the Notre Dame Alumni Association. This upcoming weekend, beginning 11/30/2024 you can begin your Advent journey with Sacred Stories of Notre Dame for 2024. "A lot of culture was lost...Even in my lifetime, it was against the law for me to dance." —David Martin, '23-'24 Initiative on Race and Resilience Artist-in-Residence and member of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi

Dear friends,

In honor and celebration of Native American Heritage Month, we invite you to experience the Indigenous Voices series here on ThinkND. We begin with last year's Native American Dance and Drum Performance, the first to be hosted on Notre Dame's campus in nearly thirty years. Notre Dame Initiative on Race and Resilience in collaboration with artist-in-residence David Martin hosted an evening featuring songs and dance styles of Potawatomi and other Great Lakes region tribes in the spirit of sharing culture, celebrating heritage, and strengthening connections between the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi and the University of Notre Dame.

Each month, engage with Indigenous Voices, a legacy of diverse Native American cultures and celebration of the craft and self-expression of Indigenous artists who continue to enrich our lives through dance, music, song, fashion and the decorative and visual arts. Indigenous Voices is co-sponsored on ThinkND by the Initiative on Race and Resilience, the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art, the College of Arts & Letters Native American Initiatives, and the Native American Alumni.

A Message From Dolly Duffy

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

This year, for the first time, my family and I won’t be celebrating Thanksgiving at home. At first, this really bothered me. I love a traditional family holiday — everyone at home, celebrating with a big feast, eating the same foods and participating in the same rituals as we’ve always done.

Instead, we’re heading to San Diego, where my son Kieran is stationed with the Navy. But as I thought more about our plans this holiday, I realized I was focusing on the wrong things. Thanksgiving is about more than food or place. None of that matters without the people you love, and my people are my family. Kieran couldn’t make it home this year, so we’re bringing Thanksgiving to him. We’ll all still be together, and what could be more traditional than that?

By the time we arrive back in South Bend on Sunday, it will be time to turn our attention to Advent, which brings with it one of my new favorite traditions, Sacred Stories of Notre Dame. These reflections from our Notre Dame family are an invitation to slow down and take notice of where we find the sacred at work in our lives — a moving tribute to the power of connection and the magic we often find right here at Our Lady’s University. It is our gift to you this season, and we hope you will follow along.

As always, I am extraordinarily grateful to count you as members of the Notre Dame family. From all of us at the Alumni Association, we wish you a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving, wherever you may be.
