Game Watch

Saturday, November 16, at 1:30 p.m.

The next Football Game Watch Party will be this Saturday, November 16th when the Irish host the Cavaliers of the University of Virginia. We will assemble at Tom’s Watch Bar at Coors Field to root the Irish on to victory and one step closer to the College Football Playoffs. Kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m. Denver time.

See you there - Go IRISH - Beat the Wahoos!

Useless Trivia Time

Why Is Virgina Referred to as the Wahoos?

Official University of Virginia sports documents explain that Washington and Lee baseball fans first called University of Virginia players "a bunch of rowdy Wahoos," and used the "Wahoowa" yell as a form of derision during the in-state baseball rivalry in the 1890s, presumably after hearing them yell or sing "wa-hoo-wa."[1] The term "Wahoos" spread around the University and was commonly in use by the 1940s. "'Hoos" emerged as an equally commonly accepted nickname at the university and in student publications. Although the terms “Cavaliers,” “Wahoos” and “‘Hoos” are used almost interchangeably to refer to University teams and players, “Cavaliers” is more often used by the media, while “Wahoos” and “‘Hoos” are frequently used by Virginia students and fans.

WHERE: Tom’s Watch Bar, 1601 19th Street, Unit 101 Denver, CO 80202

If you want to park there, see these detailed instructions; it is necessary to follow the instructions to get a discounted rate. You can also reserve and pay for a spot right now on the Spot Hero app, which is a really impressive piece of technology. (Atrium is not on the app, so I park at the Dairy Block Garage, a block away.)

BRING: Money for the traditional door prizes, and a designated Domer-driver; those $1 off 22-ounce drafts for our club don’t drink themselves!

LIGHT RAIL: Three blocks from Union Station! Several people, including seniors, have commented that the walk from Union Station to Tom’s Watch Bar is very easy:

ND vs Army

Before we get to this week’s game, a quick word about next week’s matchup, which should be fun! We have invited West Point graduates and fans to our game watch at Tom’s, and expect them to be there in numbers! So, we need ND fans to turn out as well! Historically, it’s not been great for countries who have invited an army into their midst, but we are counting on Marcus Freeman and his boys to turn out for that game. More on this next week but circle your calendars; it should be a lot of fun!

ND vs Virginia

What to say about this game? Well, if it’s much of a game, I will be both surprised and disappointed.

Virginia is 5-4 so far this year, and they just knocked off Pitt, who was undefeated until they lost the last two. So, they are not a doormat. However, they’re not that good, either.

The Cavaliers will have one familiar face with them; Notre Dame will be welcoming back WR Chris Tyree, who has had an OK season so far for the visitors.

Recap: A Fun Night Out with Notre Dame Women Connect (NDWC)

Much gratitude to all who participated in our November NDWC event in Downtown Littleton! We started at GiggleBlossom Boutique on S. Prince Street where the store owner Stephanie Mains sponsored a “give back event” to the Notre Dame Club of Denver. A percentage of the evening’s sale proceeds were donated by Stephanie to our Club (final tally coming soon!). Please stop GiggleBlossom Boutique on your next outing in Littleton; the boutique does not disappoint!

Next, we made our way to Black+ Haus Tavern on W Main St for some lively discussion of the NDWC Fall 2024 Shared Read: Remarkably Bright Creatures, an incredible novel by Shelby Ven Pelt. On our way to Black + Haus Tavern, we encountered an octopus and took a picture to document the serendipity of the timing. Marcellus would be proud of our book club group!

At Black + Haus Tavern, we discussed the novel, our various affiliations with the Notre Dame community, and shared our thoughts on the allure of the octopus! Current ND parents, an SMC alumnae (and current Holy Cross parent), and several ND alumnae rounded out our celebration of a fun night out with members of our Notre Dame Family here in the Denver area.

This event would have never happened without the expert planning and enthusiasm of our NDWC Co-Chairs, Lori Christiansen (ND 1984 and current ND Parent) and Claire Kenkel, ND 2005.  Lori and Claire - thank you for pulling this together!

UNIVERSITY NEWS

A Note From Dolly Duffy

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends,

Last week, we at the Alumni Association celebrated All Souls’ Day with a prayer service in honor of all members of the Notre Dame family who have passed away. In the days leading up to this observance, we ask for your intentions — which number in the thousands — print them off, and staff and volunteers offer every single one here on campus.

While we usually hold these services at the Grotto, bad weather necessitated a move inside. And as we gathered in the Crypt of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, I was struck by the specialness of what we were doing. We all have prayers and intentions in our hearts, and I believe God hears those prayers no matter who or where we are. And yet Notre Dame holds such sacred significance to so many that our alumni, parents, and friends would entrust those prayers to us, so that they may also be heard here on our beloved campus. What a truly awesome and humbling responsibility!

Though we hold these prayer services each quarter, we also accept your prayer requests throughout the year and regularly offer them at the Grotto. What prayers are on your heart these days? We would be honored to light a candle for you.
